Healthier Swaps: Unsweetened Applesauce For Regular Applesauce
Updated: Oct 25, 2020
A quick swap of the type of applesauce you’re buying can save you lots of calories and sugar! When you buy simply “applesauce”, this is going to be a sweetened product, generally with high fructose corn syrup as the second ingredient.
The next time you're shopping, look for the applesauce without the sweeteners. To make things confusing, this can go by many different names: natural, unsweetened or no sugar added. This is a one of several options likely to be offered. Some brands even offer a variety of flavored natural applesauce as well. I like to buy the biggest jar available and then measure out ½ cup portions at home, then storing in small Pyrex containers. A sprinkle of cinnamon tops them off. This makes packing lunches easy and cost-effective.
Enjoy this easy swap as it will save you half the amount of sugar and almost half the calories. Those all add up over time! How do you like them apples?
