Drug Facts: Meglitinides
Updated: Jan 9, 2021
Meglitinides are not the most popular of diabetes medications, but they are still an option. They work similarly to sulfonylureas, stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin. They are less likely to cause low blood sugars compared to sulfonylureas, so they may be a good option for people having issues with frequent hypoglycemia.
These medications are to be taken 3-4 times a day before meals. Some people may find this frequent dosing burdensome or annoying, other people don’t mind. A bonus is that you get the full effects of the medication with the first dose.
